The Department of Education (DepEd) on Monday said it is investigating alleged “ghost students” or undocumented beneficiaries in 12 private schools in nine divisions.
In a statement, Secretary Juan Edgardo Angara said DepEd must prevent possible misuse of public funds under the Senior High School (SHS) voucher program.
“We take these allegations seriously. Any form of misuse of public funds intended for critical education programs will not be tolerated,” he said.
Once a fraudulent activity is proven, the involved private school’s participation in the SHS voucher program may be terminated.
“This investigation is a necessary step as we pursue the truth and hold accountable those responsible,” Angara said.
DepEd is already gathering evidence and exploring legal measures, both administrative and criminal sanctions.
It is also preparing for the termination of accreditation of the involved schools once proven guilty.
