President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said Monday that the possibility of extending the tenure of Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Rommel Marbil. is under consideration.
“There is a very strong argument that it would not be good for stability, especially to change the chief of the PNP in the middle of a campaign period and approaching an election period,” Mr. Marcos said in an interview.
The President explained that the administration is studying the matter carefully, but emphasized the need for continuity in leadership within the police force as the nation prepares for the 2025 elections.
“I think that is probably a very strong argument to keep him on, at the very least, until after the elections,” he said.
Marbil, who assumed his post in April 2024, is set to reach the mandatory retirement age of 56 in the coming months. Calls for an extension have emerged amid concerns over the potential disruption of police operations during the critical pre-election period.
The PNP plays a crucial role in ensuring security and maintaining order during elections, including the enforcement of election-related laws and the protection of candidates and voters.
While no final decision has been announced, President Marcos stressed the importance of a smooth transition and stability in leadership, especially during a politically sensitive period.
Earlier, Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla said there are indications that the term of Marbil may be extended until June.
Remulla said it may be ineffective if Marbil is replaced immediately, especially since the reshuffle of several senior PNP officials has just concluded and preparations for the upcoming national and local elections have already begun.
“That’s the biggest reason I think it’s the midterm elections because you cannot shake things up now, the campaign period will also begin,” Remulla said.
