10 crew members rescued, 5 missing in Northern Samar sea mishap

Tacloban City—At least 10 crew members were rescued while five others remained missing after a cargo vessel sank due to rough sea conditions off Barangay Balicuatro, Lavezares, Northern Samar on Monday.

The cargo ship MV Jerlyn Khatness, which was loaded with cement, departed from Naga City, Cebu and was heading to San Jose, Northern Samar when it was hit by large waves, resulting in submersion of the ship at around 2:30 p.m. on December 30, 2024.

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG)-Eastern Visayas said its Coast Guard Station in Northern Samar are actively conducting search and rescue operations with the assistance of nearby vessels.

Meanwhile, PCG advised all ships transiting the seawaters off Barangay Balicuatro, Lavezares with “to exercise extreme caution and report any sightings of the missing crew or debris to the nearest Coast Guard Station.”

“Nearby rescue activity is also reported in the vicinity of the seawaters off Barangay Lipata, Allen, Northern Samar,” it added.

On December 29, 2024, two people were also reported dead after a passenger motorboat capsized when it was struck by big waves along Barangay Rawis, Laoang, Northern Samar.

The victims were identified only as “Aura,” 68, a widow from Barangay Candawid, Laoang, and “Lyn,” 50, a resident of Barangay Sulitan, Catubig, Northern Samar.

 Authorities are investigating the incidents.
