‘Nika,’ ‘Ofel’, ‘Pepito’ leave over P500M in infra damage

The partial cost of infrastructure damage from consecutive tropical cyclones “Nika,” “Ofel,” and “Pepito” now amounts to more than P516.73 million, according to the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

Cagayan Valley and Central Luzon reported at least P338.79 million in damage to flood control structures, roads, and bridges. Meanwhile, the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) suffered P170.71 million in damage to roads, as the Ilocos Region recorded another P7.24 million in damage to bridges.

As of Monday, at least 12 road sections in CAR, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, and Bicol Region remain impassable to all types of vehicular traffic due to various causes.

Affected roads include Banaue-Hungduan-Benguet Boundary Road in Tukucan, Tinoc, Ifugao due to landslide,  Benguet-Nueva Vizcaya Road, Sitio Labas, Pito Bokod, Benguet due to soil collapse, as well as Cagayan-Apayao Road, Itawes Overflow Bridge 1 and 2, Sta Barbara, Piat, Cagayan due to scoured bridge approach.

Other reasons for impassable roads include flooding, fallen trees and utility posts, and debris from damaged houses.
