Public warned against Kanlaon’s elevated sulfur dioxide emission

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) on Monday strongly advised individuals near Kanlaon Volcano in Negros province to avoid prolonged exposure to sulfur dioxide, which can cause irritation to the eyes, throat, and respiratory tract.

In its latest Volcano Summary, the agency reported that the volcano released 5,177 tons of sulfur dioxide flux on Sunday.

Phivolcs also noted that vulnerable groups such as the elderly, pregnant women, children, and individuals with health conditions like asthma, lung disease, and heart disease may be particularly sensitive to these fumes.

There is a possibility of a sudden steam-driven or phreatic eruption occurring at Kanlaon Volcano.

Additionally, five earthquakes were recorded in the vicinity of the volcano.

The volcano emitted a significant plume measuring 350 meters in height, drifting southwest, while its edifice remains inflated.

As a result of these observations, Alert Level 2 is currently maintained at Kanlaon Volcano due to increased unrest.
