THE military’s intensified campaign against loose firearms in Mindanao continues to gain traction as villagers turn in more guns through their community officials.
Three high powered firearms were voluntarily surrendered during the weekend by the residents to their barangay chairman Akmad Orak of Tamontaka 1 who in turn took the weapons to the
6th Infantry Division and the Joint Task Force Central (JFTC) undertaking the Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW) Management Program.
The surrendered firearms consisted of one 60mm mortar and two M14 rifle with magazines.
Orak turned over the said weapons to Lt. Col. Lester Mark Baky, commander of the Marine Battalion Landing Team 5.
“This turnover was a result of our continuing information and education drive against loose firearms with the aim of making our communities safe and prevent violence especially with the forthcoming local and national elections, the 6ID said in a statement in Filipino.
“The SALW Management Program intends to ensure the security and peace of our communities. The continuing surrender of loose firearms is a testament of collaboration between the local officials and their constituents for a safer Cotabato City. Through this cooperation, we hope to achieve sustainable progress and peace for all. Every step to turn in loose firearms is a move toward a brighter future for the city,” said 6ID commander Maj. Gen. Antonio Nafarrete.
