What Gen Z really wants this year

Six young Filipinos share their New Year’s resolutions

As the calendar turns, Gen Z is approaching the new year with intentions that go beyond clichés. Instead of grand reinventions, many are setting practical, personal goals shaped by experience, responsibility, and a clearer sense of self.

From learning how to manage money better to becoming more dependable for family and society, their answers reveal a generation focused on building stability without losing sight of purpose. Here are some of the New Year’s resolutions Gen Z shared with  Manila Standard Life:

Aldrine Benitez, 26, local media correspondent

“This year, I will be financially responsible. In past years, I frequently found myself buying things I didn’t need and spending just to satisfy my ‘deserve ko ‘to’ moments, ultimately leaving me with no savings. Therefore, my focus this year is to organize my finances and save for the future, all while continuing to travel and collect memories.”

Andrei Mundin, 17, incoming college student

“My new year’s resolution is to become a better and responsible person to better help the people around me like my mom. And grow into a person that my family and myself can be proud of.”

Adremil Apo, 28, government employee

“This year, I hope to become a good example of a reliable member of the community that helps each other when the time comes, always and forever.”

Audrey Nicole Alcaraz, 19, BS in Nursing student

“This year is about becoming a better, healthier, and more grounded version of myself. I want to deepen my relationship with God, build healthier daily habits, and surround myself with genuine, meaningful connections. I’m choosing peace over overthinking, learning to stop people-pleasing, and studying smarter while allowing myself proper rest. I also aim to set higher standards for how I’m treated, knowing my worth and refusing to settle for the bare minimum. These goals come with high hopes, but not pressure—just gentle reminders of who I’m becoming and the kind of life I want to build.”

Gemmalyn Jorge Amahan, 24, BS in Architecture

“This New Year, I want to prioritize my physical and mental well-being by maintaining an active lifestyle. I also aim to manage my time wisely, minimizing procrastination, and focusing on goals and habits that support my personal growth and future success.”

Claine Zuleika Valdez, 27, customer service support

“This 2026, I’m trying to be smarter with my money, take better care of my body, and spend less on things I don’t really need. I’d rather save up for travel that actually means something to me than keep buying stuff just for the sake of it.”
