Blanc Gallery opened its latest exhibition, Possible Storms, on Dec. 6, honoring the creative spirit through the works of both established and emerging artists.
Originally planned as a solo show for contemporary painter Pardo de Leon, the exhibit evolved into a group presentation when de Leon invited fellow senior artists, many showing in Manila for the first time. The lineup includes Nolet Soliven, Conrado Virina, Jacinto Sotto, Maria Lourdes de Vera, Michael de Leon, Jet Melencio, Popo San Pascual, and Melvin Mangada.
De Leon, known for her abstract portrayals of women, collaborated with Mangada, San Pascual, and Melencio to transform the show into a collective exploration of creativity.
The title Possible Storms draws from philosopher Michel Foucault’s idea of creativity as a process of bringing ideas to life rather than judging them. The exhibition’s works are described as quiet but powerful “storms” of imagination, shaped by the artists’ experiences and relationships.
Several featured artists have faced significant personal challenges. Nolet Soliven, who suffered a stroke in 2013, has relearned to paint, turning his distinctive abstract style into a form of creative therapy. Conrado Virina and Jacinto Sotto, both former advertising executives, continue to create despite physical setbacks, including strokes and Parkinson’s disease.
Other works reflect contemplative perspectives influenced by the artists’ environments, from Northern Samar and Bicol to Tagaytay. Swiss-based artist Gilles Porret, along with de Vera, Michael de Leon, and San Pascual, explores personal experiences through color, layered imagery, and abstract forms.
Mangada called the exhibition one of the most meaningful of the season, describing it as a celebration of human spirit, friendship, and creativity.
Possible Storms runs at Blanc Gallery through Dec. 30.
