Lullabies have limits

A new sleep clinic redefines comfort and care in sleep testing

Sleep is one of the most important building blocks of a child’s health and development. Yet for some, even bedtime can pose hidden risks.

In the Philippines, 5 in every 50 children experience a form of sleep apnea, a condition that disrupts breathing and causes kids to wake up, snore, or sleep with their mouth open. Symptoms such as low energy or unusual hyperactivity are often observed, but they are rarely recognized as signs of a sleep disorder, leaving many children undiagnosed.

Recognizing this concern, a new sleep clinic in Makati is reimagining pediatric sleep testing by combining hospital-level diagnostics with a more comfortable, family-friendly experience.

Hele was founded by Jacky Ang and Perkin Chai, whose own children were diagnosed with sleep apnea.

The couple said their experience with traditional sleep testing, which involved overnight studies in hospital settings, revealed how intimidating the process can be for children and their families. They launched Hele to create a more private, stress-free environment for sleep studies.

Patients at Hele stay in a private room at Makati Diamond Hotel, with facilities for caregivers and flexible scheduling. The clinic provides hotel-level amenities at no additional cost while maintaining tests monitored by sleep-trained technicians, with results interpreted by partner sleep doctors.

“We wanted to build a clinic where patients and their families can feel safe, relaxed, and cared for,” Ang said. Chai added that many families may be unaware of the risks of pediatric sleep apnea, making early diagnosis and care critical.

Hele aims to provide families with a clearer, smoother path to understanding sleep issues, offering the same standards of hospital care in a setting designed to be more reassuring for children and caregivers.

Parents are advised to consult a doctor if children frequently snore, wake during the night, or sleep with their mouths open.
