The City Government of Navotas has inaugurated various facilities in celebration of its 14th cityhood anniversary.
Rep. John Rey Tiangco, together with Regional Director of the World Scout Bureau Asia Pacific Region Jose Rizal Pangilinan, Director of Bureau of Plant Industry George Culaste, and Good Greens President Simon Villalon, led the blessing and inauguration of eight additional towers in the Urban Vertical Farm at NavotaAs Homes 2–Tanza.
The city’s vertical farm, the tallest in Metro Manila, now has a total of 12 greenhouse towers.
The initial four towers were financed by the Boy Scouts of the Philippines–Navotas City Council and Good Greens, while the additional eight were fully funded by the Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Plant Industry.
Navotas provided the 800 sq m lot for the project.
“Despite our lack of space, we strived to put up a farm here in Navotas to help promote food security among Navoteños. Now that we are in a pandemic, it is more crucial that we have a sufficient and sustainable source of food,” Rep. Tiangco said.
Good Greens, which manages the project, noted that the 12 towers can produce the same yield as that of a 3-hectare traditional farm.
Meanwhile, Tiangco, with Vice Mayor Clint Geronimo and other city officials, also led the inauguration of Tangos Elementary School Multi-Purpose Building and ERC Covered Court, both at Brgy. Tangos North; health center at Brgy. North Bay Boulevard South (NBBS) Proper; and the Navotas Rescue Center at Brgy. NBBS Dagat-Dagatan.
Navotas became a city in 2007 through the efforts and governance of then and now incumbent mayor, Toby Tiangco.
“We have overcome so many challenges over the years. Whatever we have achieved, it is because of the support and contribution of every Navoteño,” the mayor said.
