Navotas floodgate completion by Aug 8.

Public Works Secretary Manuel Bonoan said the repair of the damaged Tangos-Tanza (Malabon-Navotas) Navigational Gate is set to be completed by August 8, following an order from President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.

The President directed the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to expedite the restoration of the floodgate and the construction of retaining walls during an inspection in Navotas City on Saturday morning.

Bonoan explained that while the structure had already undergone repairs in 2024, it was recently damaged again. “We were supposed to complete the current repair by July 20, but it was delayed due to heavy rains,” he said.

He added that the navigational gate is a vital barrier against flooding in low-lying areas, especially during high tides. Despite weather interruptions, work on the retaining walls and other protective structures will continue without pause.

The DPWH confirmed it has funds secured until 2026 for continued rehabilitation. According to engineer Flocy Ismael of the North Navotas Pumping Station, the floodgate was last damaged on May 11 when a vessel crashed into it. The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority explained that the gate helps control seawater from Manila Bay, mitigating flood levels in inland areas.
