Floods displace thousands in Negros Occidental

Local government units (LGUs) distributed relief aid to at least 2,443 families affected by floods after overnight heavy rains inundated this highly urbanized city and neighboring Talisay City in Negros Occidental.

In Bacolod City, 301 families — totaling 875 individuals — were evacuated from seven barangays, the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) reported Saturday.

The evacuees include 8 families from Barangay 10, 10 families from Barangay Villamonte, 11 families from Barangay 8, 40 families from Barangay 3, 54 families from Barangay 17, 72 families from Barangay Bata, and 106 families from Barangay Banago.

In a statement, Bacolod City Mayor Greg Gasataya said the city is providing relief assistance to the displaced families.

The aid packages include clothing, food, toiletries, water containers, and other essential supplies.

“The Department of Social Welfare and Development also committed to provide assistance to the affected families,” the mayor said.

Among those affected by the floods were six nuns of the Blessed Virgin Missionaries of Carmel, who were rescued in their residence in Barangay 1 by personnel of the Bacolod City Fire Station early Saturday.

They were safely brought to the Señor Santo Niño Home in Barangay Taculing.

According to the CDRRMO, the flooding incidents occurred in the villages on the northern and northeastern portions of the city.

Meanwhile, the Talisay City Social Welfare and Development Office reported that about 2,142 families across 10 barangays were affected by floods as of Saturday morning.

The affected families include 682 in Zone 14, 480 in Zone 14-A, 389 in Zone 14-B, 300 in Zone 10, 120 in Zone 2, 60 in Zone 3, 52 in Zone 8, 32 in Zone 15, 10 in Zone 12, and five in Zone 5.

In a Facebook post Saturday afternoon, Talisay City Mayor Rowena Lizares, who personally led the distribution of relief goods in Zone 5, said the city government continues to respond and provide assistance to the flood-affected families.

Personnel from the Talisay City Primary Care Facility also checked the health condition of the evacuees and distributed doxycycline to residents as a preventive measure against leptospirosis.
