Makati opens modern pet care Center; ‘first of its kind in PH’

THE Makati City government on Wednesday announced the opening of Makati Animal Care Facility, the first of its kind in the country.

Mayor Abigail Binay led the inauguration on Tuesday, saying the facility marks another milestone in her administration’s commitment to promote animal welfare and foster a safe and pet-friendly environment.

“We are honored to be the first local government unit to open this (kind of) facility, which is dedicated to the care and protection of animals,” Binay said.

“With this facility, we hope to promote greater awareness for animal welfare and a culture of care, love, and concern for them in our homes and in our communities,” she said.

The mayor said stray pets will be put up for adoption, emphasizing that the city encourages and supports responsible pet ownership.

“We want to encourage Makatizens to be responsible pet owners and treat them humanely. With the services that we offer, there should be no reason for neglecting their pets. Being a responsible pet owner also means being mindful of one’s responsibilities in a community,” she said.

The mayor also said the city has a working partnership with the Animal Kingdom Foundation and Biyaya Animal Care, both advocates for animal welfare.

Located along Sultana St. in Barangay Olympia, the facility is equipped with resources that prioritize animal care and safety. It houses specialized rooms such as a consultation room, two surgery rooms, two recovery rooms, and two food preparation rooms.

It offers a wide range of services for pets, pet owners, and the community as a whole. These include free consultations every Monday, free vaccinations, and deworming with the first dose provided free and subsequent doses at an affordable rate of ₱30.

Microchipping services are also available from Tuesday to Friday, and free spaying and castration services are offered on a pre-scheduled basis.

The center will also serve as the office of the Veterinary Services Department which handles the issuance of certifications such as meat handler’s licenses, veterinary inspection certificates, and veterinary health certificates for pet travel.

Beyond service as a hub for pet care, the facility also ensures that impounded animals receive proper care in a safe and humane environment.
