The Taguig City government has partnered with the Games and Amusements Board (GAB) to provide crucial support to boxers and other contact sports athletes from the city.

On March 25, an agreement was signed between Mayor Laarni Cayetano, Taguig Executive Assistant for Health Dr. Cecille Montales, GAB Chairperson Francisco Rivera and Commissioner Manuel Plaza III.

The agreement ensures that athletes from Taguig will receive essential government assistance, including free annual medical, diagnostic, and neurological exams, which are required for obtaining their professional licenses.

“Today marks a significant milestone for Taguig as we strengthen our commitment to sports development and athlete welfare,” said Mayor Cayetano.

“With this memorandum of agreement, our boxers and athletes will receive the necessary support for their medical needs, allowing them to focus fully on their training and performance,” she added.

Cayetano also highlighted the transformative impact of this partnership. “We understand that being an athlete requires discipline, perseverance, and relentless hard work,” she said.

“With this collaboration, Taguig athletes can now dedicate themselves entirely to their sports without the financial burden of medical requirements. The City of Taguig is committed to nurturing your athletic careers and overall well-being,” the mayor added.

Rivera emphasized that boxers and other contact sports athletes are valuable assets to the nation and deserve comprehensive support through this agreement.

“Our boxers, especially those present here today, have big dreams—they aspire to become world champions and legends in their sport,” he said.

“If they succeed and adhere to the rules, not only will they achieve personal success, but they will also contribute to the nation’s economy. Under existing laws, those who earn will be required to pay 20 percent of their income in taxes, generating revenue for the government,” according to the GAB chief.

Rivera noted the significant earning potential within the sport and highlighted how the memorandum of agreement would alleviate the burdens faced by aspiring athletes.

“We see great potential—not just for the athletes, but for the country as well. This agreement will go a long way in helping them, and we thank the City of Taguig for its strong support,” he added.
