The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) in Western Visayas embarked on a P39.19 million coastal upgrade project aimed at enhancing access to the roll-on-roll-off (RoRo) Dumangas port while also providing an alternative route to northern Iloilo.
The DPWH undertook several key improvements, including the asphalt paving of a 5.13-kilometer segment of the Iloilo-City-Leganes-Dumangas Coastal Road, with a focus on the Sta. Barbara section.
“This coastal road is a crucial transportation link that connects the coastal communities of Dumangas, Leganes, and Iloilo City. It plays an essential role in enhancing connectivity and accessibility for residents and businesses in these areas,” the DPWH said in a news release.
DPWH Regional Director Sanny Boy Oropel explained that the asphalt overlay is necessary to maintain the road’s surface effectively. This enhancement not only improves the road’s appearance but also increases its durability and decreases future maintenance costs.
“Asphalt paving is a cost-effective solution that ensures the long-lasting performance of the pavement. By applying a new protective layer, we can significantly extend the life of the existing surface,” Oropel stated.
He also noted that the asphalt pavement minimizes wear and tear on vehicles while restoring the surface’s capacity to accommodate heavy traffic.
