PH, Saskatchewan push clean energy, nuclear pact

The Department of Energy and the province of Saskatchewan, Canada, recently convened a joint working group meeting to advance the implementation of their June 2025 memorandum of understanding and align priority cooperation areas on clean energy transition and nuclear workforce development.

The meeting, held at the DOE office in Bonifacio Global City, was attended by Ken Cheveldayoff, minister of advanced education in Saskatchewan, and co-chaired by Energy Undersecretary Mario Marasigan, representing Energy Secretary Sharon Garin.

Discussions focused on collaboration in technology development and deployment, workforce and skills development, and research and innovation to support a secure and inclusive energy transition.

The June 2025 MOU provides a framework for cooperation across priority areas, including small modular reactors, or SMRs, carbon capture, smart grids, renewable energy integration and the repurposing of aging coal assets.

“The joint working group meeting allows us to move from shared intentions to coordinated actions,” Marasigan said. “Our priority is to ensure that the Philippines’ transition is supported by capable institutions, a prepared workforce and sustained engagement with communities, including Indigenous peoples.”
