Meralco reaffirms support for Philippine national energy agenda

Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) reaffirmed its commitment to the government’s national energy agenda during an event at its headquarters, pledging to work with state agencies to expand renewable energy adoption and universal electricity access.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. joined Meralco chairman and chief executive Manuel Pangilinan to highlight programs aligned with the priorities outlined in the 2025 State of the Nation Address. These initiatives focus on social protection through electricity subsidies and the acceleration of green energy projects across the archipelago.

Pangilinan said the utility is strengthening the Lifeline Rate Subsidy Program to ensure marginalized families receive bill discounts. The company is also streamlining the application process for Net Metering to help the administration reach its goal of energizing at least 1 million households through rooftop solar by 2028.

“We continue working to bring reliable electricity to unserved and underserved communities–using both legacy and innovative grid solutions,” Pangilinan said, noting a recent hybrid solar project on Cagbalete Island that will provide 24/7 power to more than 1,000 residents.

Meralco PowerGen Corp. (MGEN) is also set to energize MTerra Solar, a 3,500-megawatt solar farm equipped with a 4,500-megawatt-hour battery energy storage system. The facility, which Meralco describes as the largest integrated solar project in the country, is scheduled to dispatch an initial 85 megawatts of power this month.

Beyond solar energy, Pangilinan revealed that Meralco secured a $2.8 million technical assistance grant from the United States Trade and Development Agency. The funds will support a study on the potential deployment of nuclear plants in the Philippines as the government explores safe and responsible nuclear adoption.

Marcos commended the utility for its role in national electrification and its efforts to reduce the country’s carbon footprint through large-scale storage and renewable capacity.

“In the spirit of partnership, let me recognize the continued support of Meralco—our largest distribution utility, for its critical role in advancing our energy goals,” Marcos said.

The event was also attended by Department of Energy Secretary Sharon Garin and Energy Regulatory Commission chairperson Francis Saturnino Juan.

Meralco remains the largest power distributor in the Philippines and stated it will continue to support government initiatives to drive sustainable and inclusive growth nationwide.
