Boracay Water expands sewer network to 67%

Boracay Water has expanded its sewer network in Barangay Balabag and portions of Yapak in Boracay Island, Aklan, to meet the rising wastewater management needs of the area under the Yapak Bypass Project.

The initiative reinforces the company’s commitment to environmental sustainability and regulatory compliance. The project adheres to the Philippine Clean Water Act and the Sanitation Code of the Philippines. It also supports Malay’s Municipal Ordinance No. 550, which mandates sewer connection within 100 meters of an available network.

As a result of the expansion, sewer coverage on the island increased from 61 percent to 67 percent. Through Boracay Water’s free connection program, Project Monsoon, 230 households—representing approximately 1,150 individuals—have connected to the system to ensure proper wastewater treatment.

The project also allowed Boracay Water to accommodate flows from Yapak and Balabag, leading to a nearly fivefold increase in connected accounts, from 30 in December 2024 to 178 in October 2025.

“Boracay Water remains steadfast in its mission to provide effective water and wastewater services while protecting the island’s natural beauty and ensuring long-term sustainability,” said Joanna Intas, acting general manager of Boracay Water.

Intas added that the expansion helps maintain Boracay’s pristine condition for tourism while improving public health. “This means cleaner surroundings, improved public health and a safer environment for residents and visitors alike,” she said.

Boracay Water is an operating unit of Manila Water Philippine Ventures, a subsidiary of Manila Water Co., and a concessionaire of the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority.
