The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has launched the country’s first Philippine National Standard (PNS) for parol (Christmas lanterns) in San Fernando, Pampanga.
The new standards for lamps and related equipment enforce specifications for construction and labeling to ensure that the iconic lanterns are safe and durable for both indoor and outdoor use.
DTI Secretary Cristina Roque said the new standard empowers parol makers to enhance product quality, ensure safety and compete in global markets.
“More than ensuring product safety, these standards uplift our parol makers whose craftsmanship reflects Filipino pride. By guiding them toward quality and reliability, we empower their businesses to grow and thrive globally while protecting Filipino consumers,” she said.
DTI Fair Trade Group assistant secretary and supervising head Regino Mallari Jr. described the new standard as a step toward a safer and more sustainable parol industry.
“The establishment of the first Philippine National Standard (PNS) for parol marks an important step toward economic growth and sustainability in the parol industry. While it remains voluntary, it provides clear guidance for manufacturers to produce high-quality, safe, and reliable products for consumers,” Mallari said.
