Herma Shipyard Inc. (HSI) said it launched the Motor Tanker (M/Tkr) Malawig, an 18,000-barrel petroleum tanker, from its shipyard in Mariveles, Bataan.

The vessel, designed and built by HSI, is intended to demonstrate the company’s capability to produce internationally certified tankers in the Philippines.

Industry partners from Pioneer Insurance, Metropolitan Bank of the Philippines and the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) attended the launch.

The M/Tkr Malawig has an overall length of 86.10 meters, a length between perpendiculars of 80.933 meters, a moulded breadth of 13.720 meters and a moulded depth of 5 meters.

Its cargo tanks can hold 18,000 barrels at 95-percent capacity. The vessel also includes slop tanks with a total capacity of 70.362 cubic meters, fresh water tanks with a capacity of 80.785 cubic meters, ballast tanks holding 1,024.945 cubic meters, and fuel oil tanks with a capacity of 91.060 cubic meters.

The M/Tkr Malawig is classified by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), a member of the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS). IACS is a technical organization of 12 marine classification societies that promotes safety and pollution prevention in the maritime industry, with its members classifying over 90% of the world’s merchant shipping tonnage. The vessel also complies with regulations from the Philippines’ Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA).

Herma Shipping and Transport Corp. (HSTC) will operate the M/Tkr Malawig, addressing the demand for modern petroleum transport in the Philippines.

The launch follows the recent deliveries of the 12,000-barrel tankers M/Tkr Mayabong and M/Tkr Maginoo, which can carry three petroleum grades simultaneously. HSI plans to launch another 18,000-barrel tanker in July.

“This launching highlights our dedication to Filipino shipbuilding excellence,” said Herminio Esguerra, founder and chairman of the Herma Group, in a statement.
