A group of Southeast Asian energy companies, including state-owned Philippine National Oil Co. (PNOC), pledged to reduce methane emissions as part of a broader push toward a just energy transition.
The companies, which are members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Council on Petroleum, released a joint statement Wednesday ahead of the 29th United Nations Climate Change Conference, or COP29.
“The ASEAN organization of national energy companies, ASCOPE, serves as a unified platform that empowers its members to actively engage in initiatives supporting their respective energy transition goals. PNOC is optimistic about leveraging its collaboration with prominent LNG exporters, Petronas and Pertamina, to support its energy agenda,” said PNOC president and chief executive Oliver Butalid.
The other signatories include Malaysia’s Petronas, Ministry of Mines and Energy Cambodia, PT Pertamina (Persero), Myanma Oil and Gas Enterprise, Singapore LNG Corporation Pte Ltd, PTT Public Company Limited and the ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE).
The signatories acknowledged the urgent need for sustainable climate action and vowed to develop activities supporting the Paris Agreement goals, collaborate on innovative solutions for methane emissions management, establish a regional baseline for methane emissions and share practices and the region’s progress on decarbonization and methane emissions through ASCOPE.
