Jones Bridge lightshow boosts Manila’s heritage

Manila City Hall and the Filipino-Chinese business community inaugurated the Jones Bridge Light Show project during a turnover ceremony at the Pasig River observation deck on Dec. 12, 2025.

The cultural landmark project is a joint effort between the city government and the Federation of the Filipino Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FFCCCII) to revitalize the historic district.

Manila Mayor Isko Moreno expressed his gratitude to the FFCCCII for its consistent support in improving the city’s public facilities and environment.

Moreno noted that the first generation of Filipino-Chinese settlers near Intramuros worked as masons, plumbers and vendors, laying the groundwork for the modern Binondo district.

He said many community members are third or fourth-generation immigrants who continue the tradition of contributing to Philippine society.

FFCCCII president Victor Lim said the project highlights the historical importance of the Jones Bridge, which connects Intramuros and Ermita to Binondo, the oldest Chinatown in the world.

Lim said the bridge represents the growth of a community built on resilience, diligent business practices and filial piety. He said the federation remains committed to enhancing Manila’s image as a way of giving back to the mainstream public.

Manila City Hall will be responsible for the proper maintenance of the light show facility to ensure residents and tourists can enjoy the upgraded public space.

The ceremony was attended by Manila Vice Mayor Chi Atienza, Presidential Special Envoy to China for Trade, Investments and Tourism Benny Techico and Manila Department of Tourism, Culture and Arts head Cristal Bagatsing.

Other attendees included Manila Chinatown Development Committee chairman Tony Sy and various leaders from the Filipino-Chinese community.

The project serves as a symbol of the long-standing partnership between the local government and the private sector in preserving Manila’s heritage.
