Cebuana Olympian Elreen Ando, now competing in a lower weight category, still finished decently in the 2021 World Weightlifting Championships on Saturday at the Uzbekistan Sports Complex in Tashkent.
Now seeing action in the women’s 59-kg class, Ando settled for fifth place out of 27 participants.
Ando, who went down in weight from the 64-kg category when she took part in the Tokyo Olympics, tallied a total of 214 kgs.
She started off by easily lifting 93 kgs in the snatch, before concluding her bid at 98 kgs.
Then, the 23-year-old Ando took three attempts before she was finally able to lift 116 kgs in the clean and jerk.
Reigning world champion and world record holder Kuo Hsing-Chun of Chinese Taipei took two gold medals and a silver in her three events.
Kuo had a total of 230 kgs, following a silver medal off her 100-kg lift in the snatch and a golden-medal take of 130 in the clean and jerk.
Colombia’s Yenny Alvarez bagged the total silver with 226 kgs, while Olga Te of Russia completed the podium with 218 kg.
Meanwhile, Dave Pacaldo settled for 17th place in the men’s 67 kgs, with Doston Yokubov of Uzbekistan claiming the gold, and Francisco Mosquera (Colombia) and Zulfat Garaev (Russia) taking the silver and the bronze, respectively. Peter Atencio
