The Philippines posted the second-highest automotive sales recovery in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in 10 months, rising 23.8 percent to 214,187 units from 183,305 units in the same period last year.
Data from the ASEAN Automotive Federation showed signs of recovery in four major markets in the region, with Indonesia leading the growth at 703,089 units sold from January to October, up 67 percent from 421,054 units a year ago.
Cumulative vehicle sales in the region grew 15.7 percent in the 10-month period to 2.17 million from 1.87 million last year.
Singapore and Vietnam reported sales growth of 12.2 percent and 3 percent, respectively. Singapore sold 51,069 units from 45,506 units, while Vietnam sales increased to 218,734 from 212,410 units.
The rest of ASEAN Federation members continued to sustain slower growth over the pandemic period. Malaysia’s sales dropped 4 percent to 382,379 from 401,714 units in 2020.
Myanmar and Thailand posted declines of 49 and 2.1 percent to 7,874 from 15,433 units and 596,393 from 608,880 units, respectively.
The Philippines continue to lead in terms of recovery of sales of motorcycles and scooters in the region after posting year-to-date incremental output of 23.5 percent. Sales hit 1.16 million units of two-wheeled motor vehicles from 941,260 units in 2020.
Singapore posted second fastest sales with 9,724 units sold, up by 13 percent from 8,499 units in 2020. Thailand managed to keep sales positive at 3.5 percent to 1.31 million from 1.27 million.
Philippine vehicle production went up 30.7 percent to 71,758 units from 54,894 units in 2020 to rank 5th in the region.
Indonesia posted the fastest production rate of 892,352, or 62.4 percent higher over 2021’s output of 549,591 units. Thailand continued to lead production with 1.36 million units, up 22.9 percent from 1.11 million in 2020.
Vietnam grew production by 5.3 percent to 125,962 from 120,556 units, while Malaysia and Myanmar posted negative production rates of -1.4 and -88 percent, respectively. Malaysia’s output declined to 369,406 from 374,482 units and Myanmar’s production dropped to 1,201 from 9,975 units.
Total vehicle output in the region increased by 27.3 percent to 2.82 million units from 2.22 million units in 2020.
Motorcycle and scooter production continued its upward trend, increasing by 18.1 percent to 2.53 million units from 2.14 units a year ago.
The Philippines maintained a rapid recovery as production grew by 51.8 percent to 727,778 from 479,496 units while Thailand production improved by 11.2 percent to 1.42 million units from 1.28 units.
Malaysia sustained slower growth of -1.3 percent to 378,028 from 382,989 units.
