Suarez eyes WBA Asia title

Olympian Charly Suarez showed his maturity and readiness for the bigger stage when he gave former undefeated Delmar Pellio a neat boxing lesson in their 10-round super-featherweight bout at the “Ultimate Knockout Challenge” boxing card over the weekend at the Elorde Sports Complex in Paranaque City.

His coach, manager, and friend Delfin Boholst revealed to Manila Standard that Suarez is looking forward to a regional title as challenger for the World Boxing Association Asia title.

“Baka sa March, regional title na kami” said Boholst.

Suarez has only 10 wins with no defeat since turning professional in January 2019, but his international exposures as a national athlete have made him ripe for bigger challenges as a professional.

It showed in Suarez’s match against Pellio whom he dominated with speed, skills and overall ring generalship for a unanimous decision win that handed the latter’s first defeat in 10 professional fights.

The three-time Southeast Asian Games champion feels that as a 33-year-old fighter, it is not too late to reach the world stage.

“Feeling ko nga nasa peak ako sa age ko. Kaya every opportunity to win ginagawa ko to improve my record para sa ultimate goal ko na world title,” said Suarez.

A crack at the regional Asia title is like putting his one foot on the world championship.

“We always know naman na ang kasunod ng regional title is the world the title, so Charly is on the right track,” said noted promoter and manager Brico Santig.

March could be a perfect date for Suarez because even as a professional, he still expressed interest in representing the Philippines in SEA Games and the Asian Games.

A victory would put him in good a position to earn a slot for the national boxing team that will see action in the Vietnam SEA Games slated for May.

Suarez’s continued success is also credited to his perfect blend with Boholst, who was a former teammate with the national team.

“Nu’ng mag-decide si Charly to turn pro in 2019, aksidente nagkita kami. Nag-kausap na kami na tutal kabisado na namin ang isat-isa, ako na lang daw mag manager and coach niya. So far so good naman at we agree na aabot kami magkasama sa world title,” added Boholst.
