The Department of Justice said Wednesday that convicted Police Master Sergeant Jonel Nuezca, found guilty by the court three months ago for murdering mother and son in Tarlac last Christmas, had collapsed and died while inside the New Bilibid Prison.
Justice Undersecretary Deo Marco said he was informed about the death of Nuezca, who was sentenced to 40 years in prison last Aug. 26 for killing 52-year-old Sonia Gregorio and her 25-year-old son Frank Anthony in Paniqui town in Tarlac five days before Christmas last year.
Marco said the Bureau of Corrections is investigating the circumstances surrounding Nuezca’s death Tuesday, and that he had asked for a copy of their investigation report.
“Per (BuCor spokesperson) Assistant Secretary Gabriel Chaclag, they are already looking into it. I asked to be given a copy of the report of their investigation,” Marco said in a text message to reporters.
Chaclag said they were conducting an investigation to determine the cause of Nuezca’s death and if there was foul play. The National Bureau of Investigation will conduct the autopsy.
Based on the initial information given by Chaclag, at around 6:44 p.m. of Nov. 20, Nuezca was reportedly walking outside the dormitory building when he suddenly collapsed. He was reportedly in the company of other people when the incident happened.
His cellmates reportedly brought the unconscious Nuezca to the NBP hospital.
