Tax amnesty sought for QC businesses

District 2 Councilor and vice mayoral bet Winnie Castelo is batting for the grant of a tax amnesty to thousands of delinquent business establishments in Quezon City.

Under his proposed Ordinance No. 513-2021, he said it cannot be denied that the COVID-19 pandemic and the series of lockdowns have caused untold suffering on businesses and the people in general.

He lamented that the pandemic has disrupted business operations, resulting in reduced income, reduction of workforce, or closure of establishments.

“It has caused business taxpayers to struggle in settling their dues and obligations to the city, thus incurring penalties and surcharges,” he said. An amnesty could help businesses update their tax payments and recover from the adverse effects of the COVID-19 crisis, he cited.

Under the Local Government Code, a local government unit is allowed to grant a tax exemption, incentives, or relief. The proposed amnesty grant legislation entitled, “Tax Amnesty on Delinquent Business Taxes in Quezon City” is co-authored by Councilors Karl Edgar of District 5 and Melencio Castelo Jr. of District 6.
