Southeast Asian Games gold medallist Jamie Lim made it as far as the fifth round before bowing out of contention in the hunt for a gold medal in the World Karate Federation Senior World Championships 2021 on Wednesday in Dubai.
The 24-year-old Lim absorbed a 1-2 setback at the hands of Ukraine’s Anita Serogina in the quarterfinals of the -61 kg female kumite category.
Because of this, Serogina, a veteran of the Tokyo Olympics, advanced to the semifinals, where she dominated her match against Canadian Haya Jumaa to earn a finals berth against Serbian Jovana Perkovic.
Lim will still have a chance for the bronze medal after being relegated to the repechage, to be held on Thursday.
She is now competing in a lower weight level since winning the gold medal in the +61 kg category in the 2019 SEA Games.
Earlier, Lim prevailed over Russia’s Alana Kochieva, 4-2, in her opening encounter.
Then, Lim won scoreless encounters with Xhunashi Caballero of Mexico and Sarara Shimada of Japan via domination in the second and third rounds, respectively.
