Calling herself a Filipina, Yuka Saso, born and raised in the Philippines, may be choosing Japanese citizenship in two years' time, but she is still very much proud of her "dual heritage".
"I am a Filipina, born in the Philippines to a Japanese father and Filipino mother. I was raised in both Japan and the Philippines. I am immensely proud of my dual heritage and that will never change," said Saso in a statement.
On Wednesday, Saso stunned the golfing world and her Filipino fans as she announced her decision to become a Japanese citizen when she turns 22 on June 20, 2023.
“After much thought and consultation with my family, friends and advisors, I have begun the process of acquiring Japanese citizenship,” said the 20-year-old Saso following the cancellation the Toto Japan Classic on Thursday at the Seta Golf Club’s North Course.
The world no. 6 Saso has since thanked her supporters for respecting her choice.
“Thank you for respecting my choice. I am grateful to both my Filipino and Japanese supporters. I would not have achieved anything in my career without your support,” she said.
Saso’s bid to embrace Japanese citizenship was influenced by Japanese law, which encourages individuals to consider their status before turning 22 years old.
Her decision drew support from her long-time sponsor, International Container Terminal Services, Inc.
“International Container Terminal Services, Inc. respects Yuka’s choice of citizenship. Our support for her goes beyond her citizenship preference because of her outstanding talent and achievements. Yuka has truly evolved to become a global icon, and we are proud to be a part of her journey,” said company officials in a statement.
ICTSI executives believe that Saso’s “unparalleled dedication and determination are in line with ICTSI’s commitment to excel and break barriers.”
