Democratized healthcare services tops #Globe5GHackathon

The successful run of the Globe 5G Hackathon has brought out three groups on top, namely Alaga Health, a telehealth marketplace and service hub, Tenth Maria, a mobile app that recovers surplus food for underserved communities, and Team CamvS, an online service mall, as the competition’s winners, for their exceptional use of 5G technology in growing and building their platforms.

Out of 289 teams and over 700 individuals who entered the competition, the winning ideas in the first-ever Globe 5G Hackathon focused on democratizing healthcare services, proper food waste management for businesses, and creating opportunities for service providers and clients.

As the pioneer of 5G technology in the Philippines, Globe launched the three-month competition as a way to unlock Filipino innovators’ potential and assist them in bringing their ideas for high-impact, real-world applications of 5G to life.

“We live in a fast-paced world and we at Globe believe that the best way to keep up with the changing times is to educate our customers about the power of technology and its possibilities for bettering our society. We hope to have more hackathons in the years to come and may this platform hone the desire of the Filipino youth to inspire and spark further innovations for the betterment of the future,” said Darius Delgado, Head of Globe Consumer Mobile Business.

The top three winners were determined by their scores in the following areas: 20% business plan proposal, 20% venture worthiness, 40% testing of the working prototype, and 20% presentation and defense during the question and answer portion of the program.

Among the judges for the competition’s finals were Globe’s Head of Product and Content Nikko Acosta, Portfolio Operations Director of Kickstart Ventures Bit Santos, 917Ventures Managing Director Vince Yamat, Executive Director of Animo Labs Frederico Gonzalez, and Fellow & Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation of De La Salle University Dr. Raymond Tan.

Alaga Health, Tenth Maria, and Team CamvS also received cash prizes of up to P200,000 to help them scale up their ideas, as the top three winners of the competition. They will also receive continued mentorship from Globe over the coming months, as they build their products and services.

Meanwhile, the remaining groups in the top 10, namely LunaX, bant.AI, OHC, D’Hacks, Handuraw, iGAT, and Vortex Runners, all received P20,000 each to continue development of their proposed services.  Among those include a virtual patient simulator for medical students, a road safety mobile app, an online masterclass for online mental health support, and a connected IoT system for the fishing industry.

Globe also awarded Alaga Health with the 5G Globe of Good Award for its exceptional tech applications for social impact. The special award is in recognition of how the group used emerging technology to address societal issues faced by Filipinos today.

5G technology opens several opportunities for Filipinos, as it offers the fastest connectivity and download speeds, ultra-low latency, greater bandwidth, superior network reliability, and the ability to connect to more devices.

The hackathon allowed budding technopreneurs composed of students, professors, professionals, and startups to learn from enablement workshops conducted by tech industry leaders and utilize networking opportunities.

Prior to Demo Day, the top 10 teams also received mentorship from the 5G Hackathon’s co-presenters Alibaba, Amazon Web Services (AWS), Cascadeo, Google, Hewlett Packard (HP), Huawei, Intel, MDI, Microsoft, Tech Mahindra, DLSU Animo Labs, and 917Ventures.

Globe strongly supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly UN SDG No. 9, which highlights the roles of infrastructure and innovation as crucial drivers of economic growth and development.  It is also committed to upholding the UN Global Compact principles and 10 UN SDGs.
