Darryl Yap delves into the dark side of catfishing in new movie ‘Sarap Mong Patayin’

Deception is rampant on social media and despite numerous warnings, many people still fall victim to it and suffer terrible consequences.

This is the relevant issue that Sarap Mong Patayin would like to tackle.

Directed by Darryl Yap, the Vivamax movie centers on the story of a gay guy who connives with a woman to lure men, but when they picked the wrong guy, things turn deadly.

A film about “catfishing” — a term which means that someone is pretending to be somebody else online – delves into how perpetrators steal photos and even personal information of others and set up fake profiles that would attract people who are looking for love or a hookup.

Darryl Yap’s forthcoming sexy psychological comedy ‘Sarap Mong Patayin’ features Ariella Arida in her first major role opposite actor Kit Thompson and comedian Lassy Marquez.

In the movie, Kit Thompson (#Y, Momol Nights) plays Yael, a 25-year-old guy who works out in a CrossFit gym.  His picture is seen on Course, an online dating app where participants can engage in sexual activities.  All they have to do is click on “Inter,” if they are ready to meet in person and be physically intimate, or click “Intra,” if it’s all just a digital sexual act.  Yael sends a message to his longtime chatmate, and chooses “Inter”.

Ariella Arida (The Killer Bride, Gandarrapido: The Revenger Squad) plays Krista, the woman Yael believes to be chatting with and the one he’s fantasizing over.  Krista is aware of Yael’s existence, but she is not the only one handling her account.

Beks Battalion’s Lassy Marquez (The Mall The Merrier, Beauty and the Bestie) plays Noel, Krista’s friend and partner in catfishing.  Noel is excited about meeting Yael.  Together with Krista, he plans their succeeding actions.  Noel is in need of funds and if they play their cards right, he and Krista will get what they want.

Also written by Darryl Yap, the sexy “pyschomedy” promises to give viewers various emotions. Each character and turn of events will leave viewers scared and thinking about catfishing.

“This film is not for everybody. The movie was made to give the audience an idea kung ano ang nararamdaman o nakikita ng isang tao under the influence of prohibited drugs,” Yap stated.

“But if you’re looking for something different, I guarantee you na, ito, walang kagayang ibang pelikula. So I’m really glad that the MTRCB is not into the digital platform kasi, in this movie, I was able to tackle the evil essence of sex, drugs and the internet. Nandito ‘yun lahat,” he added.

Sarap Mong Patayin is available for streaming in Vivamax starting Oct. 15.  The theme song was sung by Marion Aunor.
