Taal Volcano records 142 earthquakes

Taal Volcano in Batangas has generated 142 volcanic earthquakes in the past 24 hours.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said the activity at the main crater was dominated by upwelling of hot volcanic fluids in the Taal Lake.

The volcano generated plumes 2,400 meters tall that drifted west southwest and northwest.

Sulfur dioxide (SO2) emission averaged 5,973 tons per day on Aug. 21.

“In addition, vog (volcanic smog) was observed over Taal Volcano and vicinity,” Phivolcs said.

Alert Level 2 (increased unrest) still prevailed over Taal Volcano.

“The Department of Science and Technology-Phivolcs reminds the public that at Alert Level 2, sudden steam- or gas-driven explosions, volcanic earthquakes, minor ashfall and lethal accumulations or expulsions of volcanic gas can occur and threaten areas within and around Taal Volcano Island,” the agency said.

Government prohibits the entry into Taal Volcano Island, a permanent danger zone, especially the vicinities of the main crater and the Daang Kastila fissure.
