Ateneo de Manila standout Maxine Esteban got back at Samantha Catantan, 11-10, in the finals of the senior women’s foil action over the weekend in the final leg of the National Open Fencing Championships in Ormoc City.
The 20-year-old Esteban avenged her loss to Catantan, 8-15, in the second leg, and this allowed her to remain in contention for a slot in the national squad.
A bronze medallist in the women’s team foil, Esteban fought her way in the finals with a 15-11 triumph over Wilhelmina Lozada during action that was held at the Ormoc Superdome.
Earlier, CJ Concepcion ruled the men’s sabre after he disposed of Daniel Sia, 15-11.
Noelito Jose Jr. took the top honors in the men’s epee after he prevailed over Lee Ergina, 15-4.
Jose earlier towed Team Bench to the team top honors with a 5-1 win over Prince Felipe.
Team Bench went on to post a 45-33 beating of Canlas Fencing.
Team Ormoc, behind Mickyle Bustos and Hanniel Abella, stopped University of the East-Manila, 45-38, for the women’s team epee gold.
Bustos edged Andrea Matias, 7-2, while Abella drew with Jaymi de los Santos, to power Ormoc to the title.
