Industry body eyes 1 million electric vehicles on the road by 2030

The Electric Vehicle Association of the Philippines on Wednesday disclosed its target of 1 million e-vehicles plying Philippine roads by 2030, thrice more than the previous forecast of 300,000 units.

EVAP president Edmund Araga said in a pre-event briefing the industry was hoping to achieve the forecast with the enactment of the Electric Vehicles and Charging Stations Act, which is waiting for bicameral approval.

“Our target was to be… noisier than ever on approving the law. We never stopped. We move forward on having it approved. We are hoping that this year, it will happen. We want to really keep on pushing it forward and we expect that all will come into place if the regulations are established,” Araga said.

He said the e-vehicle units could be two-wheeled, three-wheeled and four-wheeled as long as they could be utilized for public transportation.

Araga said more people were inclined to buy and use e-vehicles, while the proposed law would help bring down the purchase cost.

The group together with Manila Electric Company and the Department of Energy will host the 9th Philippine Electric Vehicle Summit on Aug. 26 and 27.

The two-day summit, with the themed “Accelerating the Switch to Electro-Mobility in the Philippines”, will focus on fast-tracking electric vehicle adoption in the local transport sector in line with the government’s medium-term goal of attaining a low-carbon economy.

“We need to step up our efforts to achieve our goals for rapid EV deployment, and to do this, government and private sectors need to collectively reaffirm their commitment to do so,” Araga said.
