Natividad’s gold highlights CSB’s taekwondo dominance

College of St. Benilde bet Loralee Natividad bagged the gold medal in the welterweight division, highlighting the dominance of the Lady Blazers in the speed kicking event of taekwondo of the NCAA Season 96 online tournament last Monday.

Natividad, the taekwondo MVP in the women’s category, scored 7.067 points to capture the title, besting Aliciarose Gonzales of Season 96 host Letran, who finished with 6.400 points for the silver, while fellow Lady Knight Shiela Mae Samson had 6.317 points for the bronze.

Two other CSB athletes emerged as winners, Anne Christine Obenza and Lucille Cunanan, who ruled the middleweight and heavyweight categories, respectively, after the games were televised on GTV channel of GMA-7, the official broadcast partner of the NCAA.

The Blazers went 1-2 in the middleweight division behind Obenza’s gold medal winning performance of 6.583 points, and Ashley Judd Felipe’s silver medal run of 6.175 points.  Arellano University’s Kezia Eustaquio scored 6.142 points to reach the podium.

Lucille Cunanan capped CSB’s dominance in the women’s division by winning the heavyweight gold with 6.475 points.  Arellano’s Beverly Michelle Bandiola recorded 6.358 points for the silver, while San Beda’s Roxanne Candatu had 6.083 points for the bronze.

The Blazers finished the six-day tournament with four gold medals, three silvers and three bronze medals.

The Chiefs placed second with one gold, two silvers and two bronzes, while the Red Jins had a 1-1-2 medal haul in third place.

Arellano’s lone gold in the competition went to Paulene Rey, who emerged triumphant in the lightweight division with 6.508, beating Rocio Cortez Diaz of CSB (6.433) and her schoolmate Francis Claire Apuya (6.250).

Jose Rizal University scooped one gold in fourth place, followed by San Sebastian with one gold and one bronze, and Letran with two silvers.

The junior speed kicking competitions began Tuesday.
