DOE asked to enforce green energy auction

Solar developers are calling for the immediate implementation of the Department of Energy’s Green Energy Auction Program to help add power generation capacity starting next year.

GEAP, which has been launched by DOE to do away with the feed-in tariff policy that imposed an additional financial burden on consumers, was supposed to be launched in June.

“There has been a call for the immediate implementation of GEAP,” said Salvador Antonio Castro, president and chief executive of Cleantech Global Renewables during the Asian Solar Summit held virtually.

DOE is fast tracking the establishment of GEAP with an initial 2000 MW to augment RE capacity in the grid. The pricing program will support RE generators in securing power supply agreements and selling their energy.

Castro said the renewable energy sector was waiting for GEAP, which is “an auction of approximately 2000 MW of renewable on an annual basis for the next 10 years or the equivalent of 10 gigawatts over that 10 year period.”
