On Saturday, MMDA chairman Benjamin Abalos Jr. joined Mayor Joy Belmonte in the inauguration of the city’s new and improved bike lanes.

A strong advocate of biking, Abalos lauded the leadership of Belmonte for having the most extensive bike lanes in Metro Manila that promotes the active transportation amid the COVID-19 pandemic wherein mobility is important.

Aside from Abalos and Quezon City officials, other cyclists also biked from Quezon City Hall to Elliptical Road, Quezon Avenue, Agham Road, and BIR Road, using the city’s designated bicycle lanes.

The MMDA chief said his agency is assisting the Department of Transportation and Department of Public Works and Highways in interconnecting the bike lanes in the National Capital Region and making bicycle lanes safer and accessible for cyclists.

Under the government’s long-term plan, more bicycle lanes will soon be installed along Epifanio de los Santos Avenue and other major thoroughfares in Metro Manila.

Designated bicycle lanes would ensure the safety of bikers and encourage the use of the alternative mode of transportation.

The MMDA advocates the use of bicycles as a reliable means of transportation during the pandemic. Aside from having an active and healthy lifestyle, there is physical distancing when riding the two-wheel non-motorized vehicle.

The MMDA, in previous years, has installed bike lanes along EDSA, from Magallanes to Ayala Avenue; University Avenue up to Tandang Sora in Commonwealth Avenue, Quezon City; Remedios Circle up to Paraiso ng Batang Maynila on M. Adriatico Street in Manila; and from Santolan LRT-2 station to Imelda Avenue along Marcos Highway in Marikina City.
