Reset and reflect

Reset and reflectNow that this year is just hours left, most of us must still be hoping that there’ll be a universal reset and things would turn out differently the past 12 months.

Partly for the same reason, I am currently drawn to a Netflix series concluded two years ago, called Timeless. This American-made science fiction series features a time-traveling team trying to stop a mysterious organization from ruining history. In Season 2, episode 6 titled “King of the Delta Blues,” one of the characters led the group to November 1936, or on the day singing blues guitarist Robert Johnson was to record songs that in essence would pave the way to popular music produced in later decades.

Smart's New Year countdown e-concert RESET 2021 features Bamboo, The Itchyworms, and Unique Salonga.

In the fictional tale, villains were trying to kill Johnson before he could record while the protagonists purposely traveled back to protect him. The lead character, played by actress Abigail Spencer, knew that “killing rock n roll at its source” would mean “killing the counterculture as we know it.”

In real life, the great blues musician, who legend claimed sold his soul to the devil to become a master guitarist, died aged 27 in 1938. Or before most members of the infamous 27 Club were even born. He only participated in two recording sessions that yielded 29 songs. Quite productive considering how his music impacted the decades especially after World War II.

Oh, if some bad people can resort to time-traveling to shake up history to their favor, so do the well-meaning real people of 2020 who would get on board a time machine any given opportunity to go back and fix the world’s currently broken heart. How we all wish someone could at least be transported to 2019 and obliterate coronavirus before it contaminated a place in China called Wuhan.

Meanwhile, in speaking of fixing the world’s broken heart, mobile services provider Smart Communications embraced the mindset of music fans with its RESET 2021, a star-studded online concert featuring top OPM artists led by Bamboo, The Itchyworms, and Unique Salonga. The event will be streamed later today (Dec. 31) starting at 10:40 p.m. via Smart's YouTube channel and simulcast on TV5 and Cignal.

Also joining the e-show are R&B artist Kiana Valenciano, alternative rock band She's Only Sixteen, and beatmakers Ace Ramos and MC Pao Avila. It will cap off Smart GigaFest described as a season of celebration featuring world-class entertainment, e-sports tournaments, digital innovations, and exciting promos and freebies.

“After a most challenging year, we are one with our nation in hoping for a brighter and better 2021. This is the time to find our footing once again, rise together, and #OWN2021 with a sense of renewed purpose,” said Jane J. Basas, SVP and Head of Consumer Wireless Business at Smart.

Smart also ushers the new year by turning 21 lucky subscribers into millionaires through GIGAMANIA, which offers over P30 million worth of exciting prizes and weekly freebies for lucky Smart and TNT customers nationwide via the GigaLife App.

Time to face the music, especially if it'll be just like starting over.
