Have you heard of Hotbox? Lockdown’s hottest takeaway innovation

The nearly year-long quarantine has given birth to a number of food trends that delighted the feeds and palates of Filipinos.

PULL, HEAT, EAT. The Filipino-made self-heating, portable food box, dubbed Hotbox, allows businesses to deliver their dishes to customers, who can then re-heat them by simply pulling a string. In photos are Richmonde Hotel Ortigas’ Holiday Bento Hotbox and Holiday Platter Hotbox (photo below).

But perhaps one of the most interesting, fascinating even, that emerged from the year of food takeout and delivery is Steam Box Corporation’s Hotbox.

The Filipino-made self-heating, portable food box—the first of its kind in the country—allows diners to heat their take-away food wherever they may be. No electricity needed.

“You can take it with your wherever you go—to the office, beach, car, park, or even the great outdoors,” said the company, which began operations in May of this year, the middle of the pandemic, no less.

A game-changer in food packaging, it allows clients to deliver their dishes to customers, who in turn can simply re-heat them by pulling a string. Steam will then come out in two to three minutes and continue heating up the food for up to 30 minutes.

Prior to the holiday season, Hotbox has become popular among hotels offering meeting packages. Today, the self-heating packaging provides an easy way to serve holiday feasts.

Richmonde Hotel Ortigas, for instance, offers its own Holiday Bento Hotboxes and Hotbox Platters.

Bento boxes include a selection of Yuletide dishes good for one to two persons such as Grilled BBQ Pork Ribs, Marinated Grilled Beef Belly, Seafood Paella, and Osso Bucco. Prices start at P1,000 per order.

Dishes in platters include Grilled Beef Belly with German Sausages, Lemon Grass Roast Chicken, Pan Seared Salmon, Grilled Baby Back Ribs, Roast Pork Belly, Tuna Steak, and Chicken BBQ. Prices start at P2,500, and are good for three to four persons.

All offerings are served with mixed vegetables and choice of rice or mashed potato.
