Closure of Edsa U-turn slot put off

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority announced Friday it is canceling the Dec. 7 closure of a U-turn slot along Epifanio de los Santos Avenue in Caloocan City.

This was after the MMDA granted the request of the Caloocan City government to postpone the scheduled closure, saying the move would cause heavy traffic in the area especially during this holiday season.

“The scheduled closure of Edsa-Bagong Barrio U-turn slot on Monday, Dec. 7, will not push through and instead be moved to Jan. 4, 2021. The postponement of the U-turn slot closure is in deference to the Christmas season,” the MMDA said in its advisory.

To date, the MMDA has closed six U-turn slots to give way to the government’s Busway Project, which designates the innermost lane of Edsa as an exclusive lane for public utility buses traveling from Monumento, Caloocan, to SM Mall of Asia in Pasay City and vice versa.

MMDA Chairman Danilo Lim said the agency was in constant coordination with the Transportation department, the Department of Public Works and Highways and the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board in exploring ways to facilitate the faster movement of commuters and private motorists along the 23.8-kilometer highway.

“The government’s goal of providing safe, reliable and efficient travel for commuters along the country’s main thoroughfare will further continue in coordination with concerned agencies,” Lim said.
