Former Mandaluyong Mayor Ben Hur Abalos added his second Triple Crown accomplishment last Sunday after super horse Heneral Kalentong completed a sweep, beating a strong field of entries at the Metroturf in Malvar.
An accomplished horse breeder for many years now, Abalos said: "I am looking forward to more wins for Heneral Kalentong as I plan to still race him for three more years."
"The victory was a matter of strategy for us, we wanted the other horses to tire each other out while we bided our time and jockey JV Guce did a masterful job of handling his horse," added Abalos, who also won a Triple Crown back in 2012 with another super horse in Hagdang Bato older brother of Heneral Kalentong.
Abalos also leads a group of horse owners, who took over the franchise of Metroturf owner Norberto Quisumbing in an effort turn around horse-racing in the country.
"It is sad that for a country which used to be number one in Asia in this sport, now finds itself at the bottom of the rankings in Asia, with Japan, Hong Kong, and Singapore at the top," he said.
