Maynilad to interrupt water supplies

Maynilad Water Services Inc., which serves the West Zone, on Wednesday announced rotational water service interruptions from Nov. 18 to 24.

At least a million of its customers, or 70 percent of them, will be affected by the interruptions.

“Because of the volume of the sludge entering our treatment plants starting Thursday and up to the present because of Typhoon “Ulysses,” we have to clean our basins to make the volume of water that we produce return to normal,” the company said in a statement.

Meanwhile, a panel in the House of Representatives on Wednesday approved the funding for a bill proposing the establishment of a Department of Water Resources.

The House appropriations committee, led by ACT-CIS Rep. Eric Yap, approved the measure providing the budgetary requirements for the creation of the DWR, one of the priority bills of the Duterte administration.

The DWR is one of three agencies whose creation is a priority at the Lower House.

Batangas Rep. Marvey Mariño, who sponsored the measure, said the proposed DWR would be the primary national government agency responsible for the comprehensive and integrated planning, policy formulation, management and ownership, utilization, exploitation, development and protection of the water resources of the country.

To be affected by Maynilad’s water service interruptions are its customers in Caloocan City, Malabon City, Makati City, Manila, Muntinlupa City, Navotas City, Parañaque City, Pasay City and Quezon City and Imus, Bacoor and Kawit in Cavite.

“Kapag bumalik na ang supply ng tubig sa inyong lugar, maaaring malabo o may kulay ang unang-labas na tubig. Padaluyin muna ito nang panandalian hanggang sa luminaw ang tubig,” Maynilad said in a Facebook post.

The company appealed to its customers to bear with it. It said it had scheduled a water-supply window to give customers enough time to store water, Water Supply Operations head Ronald Padua said.
