DICT, NTC direct telcos to speed up restoration of services

Pursuant to the instructions from the Department of Information and Communications Technology, the National Telecommunications Commission has directed all telecommunication entities to fast track the repair and restoration of telecom services in areas severely affected by Typhoon Ulysses.

In a memorandum signed by NTC Commissioner Gamaliel A. Cordoba, the NTC has also ordered the entities an accelerated response on the mobilization and transport of their respective technical/service personnel and equipment to the areas affected by the typhoon in order to ensure their continued operations and services to the public.

The NTC also directed telco entities to deploy "Libreng Tawag and Libreng Charging Stations" in 

strategic areas areas left with no electricity and those having no means to call their loved ones of their plight.

"You are also reminded to coordinate with the LGUs and observe strict health protocols to avoid transmission of coronavirus disease (COVID-19)," the memo stated. 

The Commission is expecting status updates every six hours of ongoing restoration activities 

being performed on the telco entities' network and facilities and a timeline for the full restoration of service.

Typhoon Ulysses, the third typhoon to hit the storm-battered Philippines in as many weeks, caused major flooding in Manila on Thursday, affecting its 12 million people.
