Science has explained why we always have a room for dessert. Blame it on sensory specific satiety or, as experts call it, “dessert stomach.”
Sugar—a new flavor profile different from what you most likely had during lunch or dinner—releases a relaxing effect in the stomach which reduces the sensation of being full.
Aside from the excitement brought by new food, in this case, something sweet, the appealing factor of those almost always good looking desserts increases that anticipation.
“It may look and smell good and (from experience) we know sweet is appealing. No more boredom with the food and the anticipation creates appetite—hence the dessert stomach,” Russell Keast, director of the Centre for Advanced Sensory Science at Deakin University, told the Huffington Post.
But who can blame these yummy treats?
Ube party cakes, rolls, and macaroons from Tous les Jours; soft and fluffy soufflé pancakes from Puffy; awesome candy donuts and OG Towers from Krispy Kreme; gluten-free donuts and flourless cakes from FRNK; creamy Cheesecake Factory goodness from Tim Hortons; and Halloween treats from Nord’s.
Then there’s Cinnabon’s Biscoff Milky Bon, Mary Grace Café’s lineup of celebration cakes with hand-piped florals and messages, Breadtalk’s colorful steam cakes, and French Baker’s version of ube pandesal.
The aforementioned pastry shops and bakery cafés bring that sweet goodness to shoppers at SM City North Edsa. As part of the Halloween celebration, customers can get these treats and more at the Fang-tastic Hub at the Block Atrium until November 2.
Meanwhile, Resorts World Manila highlights its stress-reducing dessert lineup available across its restaurant outlets and hotels.
Some of the saccharine treats include Marriott Manila’s Marriott Cafe Berliner and Halloween Cake; Sheraton Manila’s Mango Bingsu and Songpyeon (rice cake) from Oori, Ube Macapuno Cake, and Mango Sansrival; Savoy Manila’s Paris-Brest and Baklava Cheesecake; Garden Wing Cafe’s Mango Yogurt Cheesecake, Black Forest Cake, and Macadamia Mousse Cake; and Casa Buenas’s Emperador Strudel and Tablea Fondant Cake.
Drooling already? Just remember to indulge moderately.
