The coronavirus pandemic drastically reduced local vehicle and motorcycle sales and production across the Association of the Southeast Asian Nations, an industry group said Tuesday.
Data published by the ASEAN Automotive Federation showed the declining trend in automotive sales in the region. Total vehicle sales dropped 26.79 percent in the first eight months for whole of ASEAN.
Philippine vehicle sales fell 47.6 percent in the eight-month period to 123,489 units from 235,544 units a year ago, while output declined 32.8 percent to 39,171 units from 58,386 units.
Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam also posted sales declines of 51.1 percent, 28.4 percent, 47.8 percent, 33.4 percent and 25 percent, respectively.
Brunei and Myanmar showed sales growth of 9.3 and 12.5 percent, respectively.
Regional production dropped 48.6 percent in Indonesia, 30.7 percent in Malaysia, 10.5 percent in Myanmar, 42.1 percent in Thailand and 24.3 percent in Vietnam.
