Specialty Pulp Manufacturing Inc. chooses 100% clean energy from EDC

Agriculture-based manufacturing company SPMI is now being powered by clean, renewable, reliable energy from Lopez-led Energy Development Corporation (EDC), the world’s largest vertically integrated geothermal energy company. For two years, SPMI’s manufacturing plant in Leyte will be supplied with geothermal power from EDC’s Tongonan facility within the area.

“SPMI believes that its business goals must be in step with the interests and welfare of the community. We are determined to invest in eco-friendly and sustainable processes and technologies which is why we see the value of getting 100% renewable energy from EDC,” said Charina Lim-Tan, Vice President for Operations of SPMI.

SPMI is part of Ching Bee Trading Corporation (CBT), the world’s biggest abaca trader. Through SPMI, its affiliate company, CBT manufactures abaca pulp and other natural long fibers that serve as raw materials for high-quality food grade and non-food grade products for export.

“This contact with SPMI is not only a power sales agreement but a partnership for a low carbon future,” said Marvin S. Bailon, head of EDC’s Business Development and Marketing.

EDC is one of the world’s largest geothermal producers and the country’s leading renewable energy company with an installed capacity of over 1,400 MW, which accounts for 42% of the country’s generated renewable energy.
