Overstaying Chinese held for selling music videos

An overstaying Chinese tourist was arrested past noon Thursday by officials of the Optical Media Board for selling and distributing copyrighted music videos and unregistered data storage devices.

Newly-appointed OMB Chairman Christian Natividad identified the tourist as Lin Qing Qun, 50, the owner of a raided store in Carriedo, Manila.

Qun, who initially claimed he did not understand Tagalog or English upon his arrest, admitted he was an overstaying Chinese with an expired tourist visa, and that he had been living in Tomas Pinpin in Binondo for more than six years.

Seized from his store were pirated USBs, assorted flash drives, memory discs and other music video recording devices worth P1,527,000.

OMB officials also recovered thousands of pesos’ worth of blank discs and memory flash drives believed to be smuggled.

Qun is said to be one of the biggest distributors of smuggled flash drives and other high-end computer accessories in Manila.

The initial OMB operations dubbed started Monday with the seizure of some P2.9-million worth of smuggled laptops, hard discs and stand-alone CPUs in Las Piñas City.
