De los Santos wins 10th gold in quest for perfection

“I worked on everything. Every technique and movement in a kata counts,” said de los Santos.

Once again, the graceful movements, including a quick turning jump in Unsu were among the movements that enabled de los Santos to score points.

De los Santos advanced to the finals after outperforming Jaime Teruel of the Dominican Republic, 23.8-23.5.

His ninth gold medal came when de los Santos got past Murillo Alves of Brazil, 24.6-23.6 in the Hatamoto Kai Mitad Del Mundo E-Tournament.

The other week, de los Santos won three gold medals in succession using difficult techniques.

“The judges are there to find every mistake you make, so I do my best to make my kata as nearly perfect as possible,” said de los Santos.

His string of successes came de los Santos’ way since shifting to more demanding forms in kata.

This allowed de los Santos to firm up his grip at second position in the world rankings with more points.

An eighth gold came when de los Santos outperformed Matias Domont of Switzerland, 25.7-24.5, in the finals to claim the crown in the Echampions Trophy Series 1.
