The Philippine Azkals will not be able to bounce from their heartbreaking losses in the ASEAN Football Federation Suzuki Cup.
That's because the 2020 edition will not be pushing through.
Organizers said in their official website the tournament will not be held until 2021.
The AFF explained that this is “in view of the rapidly deteriorating coronavirus situation, regionally and globally.”
Two years ago, the Azkals reached the semis and lost their two matches at the Panaad Stadium in Bacolod and the My Dinh National Stadium in Hanoi.
Vietnam eventually went on grab the title, first after playing Malaysia to a 2-all draw in Kuala Lumpur, and then a 1-0 triumph over at their own home field.
Officials said that the cancellation is for the health and safety of the players, coaches, partners, fans and the public are of the highest priority, adding that the decision to postpone the tournament to 2021 will safeguard the well-being of everyone involved in the AFF Suzuki Cup 2020.
AFF President, Major General Khiev Sameth explained that the Suzuki Cup Task Force Committee held extensive discussions before reaching this decision.
“Since the onset of COVID-19, the AFF has been closely monitoring guidance from the World Health Organization (WHO), Health Ministries, government agencies, FIFA and AFC,” said Sameth.
