NLEX to stop cash transactions soon

NLEX Corp. asked the government to require all motorists to install radio-frequency identification stickers as it is set to implement cashless transactions on all expressways within the year.

Luigi Bautista, president and general manager of NLEX, said his company submitted to the Department of Transportation a comprehensive roadmap for the implementation of cashless transactions on North Luzon Expressway, Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway and Cavite Expressway.

“The DOTr is already evaluating that, and they are very supportive. We are just sorting some final details,” he said.

Bautista said the company’s proposed roadmap would be implemented in three phases.

“The first phase is 100-percent RFID in five to six months. Phase 2 would be interoperability with the other expressways which can happen in the next 12 months and Phase 3 would be the free flow already of what is called open road tolling the can happen in the next two to three years,” he said.

The current RFID penetration among motorists using NLEX, Cavitex and SCTEx stands at 30 percent to 35 percent.
